Day 6: Independence Missouri and Friends in Kansas

What a day! Lots of driving, but lots of site seeing and reminiscing with old friends. Tonight were staying on an army base, which is a first for me. Making this trip to see friends and family has made the long hours in the car totally worth it.

So today we got up pretty early to head from Omaha to Independence Missouri. It was a little bit of a long drive, but we did it with out too much stopping and complaints from the little man. Listening to The Book Thief on audible helped pass the time, and before too long we stopped at Hauns Mill. There wasn't too much to see there. Just a really cool rock and a muddy river bank. Our shoes were covered, but that's only because I explored a little more hoping to see a little more. Thank goodness for paper towels and wet ones.

After Hauns Mill, we made our way to Farr West. It was a quick stop with not much to see. In fact Carter fell asleep just before we pulled up. We let him sleep and took the opportunity to look around for a short while. When we walked back to the car, we heard music blaring and a sad lurks boy's face smashed up against the window. His door was child locked and he could get out. My heart sank when I saw him, and I felt like a terrible parent. Poor thing thought we had left him there for good. Once he calmed down, we took him to walk around for a little bit. He wasn't even mad at us, poor thing.

Next we stopped at liberty jail. It was a lot different than I pictured it. The jail was in a visitors center, and was only a replica. As we listened to a presentation I thought about how much the prophet Joseph Smith had to suffer. Because of his suffering, we can find great words of comfort in the doctrine and covenants.

We were running out of time quickly. In order to be at our friends' house in time for dinner, we had about 20 minutes to see independent Missouri. There, there was a visitors center across the street from the community Christ temple. We rushed through a few exhibits air the history of independence, and hit the road again.

We made it to our destination at the army base only 40 minutes late, but there we got to visit with old friends and Carter got to play. By the time it was time for bed, Carter was not very happy. He wanted to play all night long. When we finally got him to calm down, we all climbed in bed. Did I ever mention how much I love sleep? Well...let's just say it's A LOT! Tomorrow holds more adventures. Good night!
